Edward de Marignan, a young Parisian noble with a weakness for women, promises to retire from his irresponsible life of pleasure. Just as he arrives home from an all-night party, he is paid a visit by his fiancée (Jacqueline), her father (General de Latour), and her mother; and with the help of his efficient valet, Joseph, he receives them properly. To appease the general, Edward sends word to his women friends that he is to be married; he goes to a modiste’s to bid farewell to Henriette, Joseph’s wife, and is discovered by the valet, who thereupon gives him notice. Edward and Jacqueline are married, and following a houseparty, he gambles heavily with Dufour, but the vengeful valet slips an ace up Edward’s sleeve, causing him to be accused of cheating. When Joseph hears the shot with which Edward supposedly wipes out his disgrace, his loyalty moves him to confess; Marignan and his wife are then happily reunited.
